What is success
Success is a combination of many factors, but I think it can be defined as achieving an intended purpose with beneficial results for both the person concerned and others. In this article I will refer to professional success.
1. Defining - choosing a goal
In choosing the purpose we should consider both personal preferences and opportunities. One of the biggest challenges - difficulties in the way to success is to produce the original idea which must be compatible with both the possibilities we have and the existing, potential and uncovered demand. The first variable is mostly known, while the second requires research and intuition and is difficult to appreciate. Therefore this is the risk variable.
Chances of success are greater if:
Conclusion: choose something that you like and you are good at, considering the potential demand for it
2. Defining motivation
The benefits that could result from achieving the goal can act very well as factors of motivation. Each person is different, but generally are valid as motivations: money and material benefits, professional recognition, independence, etc.
Conclusion: make a list of possible benefits
3. Weighing difficulties - Decide
You have to investigate whether the difficulties are most likely to be overcomed with available or findable means. If the balance is in your favor, then this is the point where you can make a decision. You have to decide that no matter how long or hard something is, if you want it and you can do it, you will go after it anyway. Don't let excuses stop you, there will be always plenty of them: daily activities, obligations, time. Decide to take action. Once you decide to go for your goal, the rest is steps taken over time to get there.
4. Setting up the action plan - Organize
Good organization is one of the ingredients of success. Plan! Goals are reached one step at a time, so map out the steps you have to take to reach your purpose.
Make a list - yes, written - with all things you think should be done. If you can see it, you can do it. If you can't visualize what you have to do, then it's harder to do it.
Use Seeagenda - this excellent online organizer will help you store and schedule all your plans and projects, either for business or personal use.
Internal actions (which depend on us)
External actions (which depend also on other)
5. Take action - Implementation of the plan
If you work towards your goals constantly, you will reach them. You will just have to trust in yourself and go for it. It may not be in the timeframe you want (it's never in the timeframe we want), but you will get there eventually.
Action brings results. Inaction does not.
During this stage the actual work is done in accordance with the original plan by taking advantage of the available resources. Along this stage of course enough deviations from the initial plan will appear, but the important thing is to be positive and to better serve the ultimate goal. In the process of materialization is useful to have a favorable mental state, so adress sometimes to the motivation list in stage 2 and try to make the work itself as enjoyable as possible. This way you will have more chances to successfully develop your project.
But that's not the hardest part.
Once your plan materialized, it's time to take care of its acceptance, which will ultimately decide the success of the project.
The notion of acceptance may differ depending on activity, but usually it is related to how people from outside react to some project. It means the result of actions to promote any kind of creation to what we call target group or audience. It has the particularity and difficulty that depend in a big grade on others.
If the project manager can guess what the public wants and integrate this in his project or - even more difficult - if he can influence and direct public preferences, he will get very close to success.
6. Follow up and maintenance
Pursuing operational behavior and timely interventions are distinct, systematic and complementary actions. The aim is collecting feedback information and routing maintenance efforts in order to to maximize the acceptance degree and the beneficial results. Continuous improvement on the project based on feedback received will have immediate or long-term effects.
Conclusion: once you're in the water, you have to swim.
By all means. Yes, it may take time. No, there is no guarantee of success. Do not expect instant success, or you might be disappointed. Insist as needed. How long is that of course can be difficult to guess, because on the other hand you have to know when to quit.
Use in all stages all possible means you have available! You will be surprised to discover how many they can be.
There is one more decisive external factor: LUCK.
The only one that does not depend on us at all. And I have not yet discovered which saint is responsible with fortune. I looked, believe me.
All other factors can be influenced, recalled, improved, changed or oriented in one direction or another. This one, no.
But we have to take care of all the rest and just hope to GET LUCKY!
